Flat Packed Furniture for self assembly is very reasonable these days and so much better quality than it was in the old days, and then a lick of bold pain really brightens it up as well.
Posters or large prints in chunky frames, bed linen with his favorite characters, a bed with decent storage space underneath is a sound purchase.
Even just one mini chair transforms a room, it looks cute and kid sized and as a bonus he will really like it and identify with it - so much stuff is adult sized that when something fits right it is always a hit.
Allow your child to have some input but be sure to only let them choose between things that are acceptable to you.
